As you progress, many of the questions you had in the beginning, will be answered. You will know if and when it is time to resign from your “safe” job and step out into the unknown because your soul will be happy.

You’ve been thinking about starting your own business. You have mulled it over in your mind for months, maybe even years. You are comfortable with your current job. It provides you with stability, health insurance, and a steady paycheck, but it does not give you joy to walk into a business owned by someone else. It does not make your soul happy to spend your time and energy on someone else’s dream.

You confide in a relative or friend. They encourage you to keep that “good” job and that “guaranteed” income. They mean well but they do not understand your drive, your passion to be your own boss. You may question yourself and wonder if you should take that giant step. Will you be able to pay your mortgage? Buy groceries? Go to the doctor?

So, you turn to your local Small Business Administration office (SBA), where you take courses about how to start a business. As you research and start writing your business plan, your like-minded classmates will offer advice and support. They will help you gain confidence because they too have the same concerns.

You learn that you need to have enough money saved to allow you to live for a minimum of six months. You apply for business grants or seek out investors. You are excited about each step of the journey that is getting you closer to your goal. And, you know that as you inch or sprint along there will be hiccups. Things will not go perfectly no matter how much you plan and predict. Be prepared for those setbacks. Use them as a learning experience.

As you progress, many of the questions you had in the beginning, will be answered. You will know if and when it is time to resign from your “safe” job and step out into the unknown because your soul will be happy.
